可是，飞机没有能再次回到基地。同样还是那个道理：有些事情很难改变。比如说，当人类决定是否去做一件事情时，会权衡利弊，而不会意气用事不顾一切。因为罕见的恶劣天气，南极科考队总部取消了一切任务，拒绝出动飞机冒险去救8只狗，理由很简单：救人还来不及呢！
与雪橇犬朝夕相处的主人杰里很难接受这个事实，他四处奔波，试图说服上级雪橇犬是科考队的成员，可还是无法改变什么。他还想到另辟蹊径，请求那位博士拨出部分科研款项帮助他再次回到南极，他以为博士会顾念雪橇犬的救命之恩，可他最后一丝希望也破灭了。博士告诉他科研款项不能浪费在不切实际的事情上，还劝慰他接受现实。整个世界都跟杰里作对，他只能放弃了，把自己放逐到麻木的工作中去——人毕竟还是要面对现实。
可是那些可爱的雪橇犬的身影还是无法从心中抹去，杰里坐卧不安，陷入消沉。于是他去拜访了最早养育这些雪橇犬的老人，在那儿听到的一个故事改变了他。故事讲的是一个人带着他的4条爱犬进森林捕猎，不幸受到一只黑熊的袭击。当那人从昏迷中醒来时，发现有2只狗为了保护他而牺牲了，黑熊和另2只狗却不见踪影。那人恢复后开始四处寻找另外那2只狗，找了很久。有人劝他放弃，告诉他那已经没有什么意义了。可他仍然坚持，哪怕爱犬已经死去，他也要找到它们，因为唯有这样他才能求得内心的平静。听完这个故事后，杰里终于知道怎样才能使自己的内心真正获得平静。他决定立即返回南极，靠自己的力量！无论多么困难，这世上总有些东西值得他不顾一切地去做。
当杰里破除万难回到基地，与6只存活下来的雪橇犬重逢时，那个场面让我激动得热泪盈眶，几乎想要欢呼。要知道，那时雪橇犬在零下8度的暴风雪中已经独立生存了整整180天！180天，在沙漠般死寂的雪原，它们并肩战斗，从未失去对生的渴望，并且仍然相信主人会回来。让人庆幸的是，6条雪橇犬终于等到了那一刻；让人难受的是，有2位那样可爱的伙伴永远留在了那里。在死亡的威胁下，那些雪橇犬表现得那样勇敢那样坚强那样团结，难以用言语和文字表达，只有看过电影的人才有切身的感受，那就是：恨不得立刻插上翅膀去极地解救它们！
我一下就爱上了那8只可爱的雪橇犬，在两小时内为它们的命运而饱受折磨。我觉得人与动物之间的爱有时更为长久。等条件成熟时，我一定会养狗
